Born This Way Foundation was founded by Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta. Based on the idea that habits are formed by repeating an activity for 21 consecutive days, #BeKind21 invites people all around the world to commit to kindness.

The purpose of #BeKind21 is to build kinder, more connected communities that foster mental wellness. It’s a movement that aligns perfectly with our values as it affirms and celebrates everyone for who they are. And it’s simply an encouragement to practice small, daily acts of kindness to oneself and others.

To help with the 21-day challenge, we created our #BeKind21 Calendar (you can use ours or download and create your own).

Some of our suggested kind acts include:

• Send a joke or meme to make someone smile
• Enjoy time outside
• Thank a first responder
• Be present — focus on who you’re with and what you’re doing
• Call an elderly relative or friend
• Thank your mentor or a person you look up to

Not only is this a fantastic challenge, Born This Way Foundation has been a special partner. We were selected as the featured nonprofit during Lady Gaga’s Joanne World Tour’s Sacramento show in summer 2017, where we first kicked off mentor recruitment! Since then, we’ve enjoyed several other partner benefits like donations, shoutouts, donated supplies, a speaking opportunity, and fun Lady Gaga swag for our youth.

Born This Way Foundation was founded by Lady Gaga and her mother Cynthia Germanotta. BTWF’s Executive Director Maya Smith inspired #BeKind21 from personal experience of wanting to create and spread kindness at her son’s school. Three years later, it’s a global movement!

The purpose of the #BeKind21 challenge is to encourage small, daily acts of kindness to oneself and others. Participating organizations are encouraged to create a calendar that inspires daily acts of kindness. We were thrilled to join and come up with 21 practical acts of kindness.

You can download our complete calendar to inspire your acts. We hope you join the challenge and share your experiences by tagging us and using the hashtag #BeKind21. 

Throughout the month, we will post updates, more inspiration and share your tagged posts on Facebook and Instagram. We’re looking forward to this challenge as a way to bring people together, and as a fun activity for mentors and mentees to do together! Most of all, we hope this challenge spreads kindness during what has been an extremely difficult year for us all. 

We can’t wait to see the many acts of kindness and hope you join us in building a habit of spreading kindness. Along the way, we encourage you to ask yourself:

• How does this random act of kindness make me feel?
• How does doing something kind for others affect my mood?
• Do I want to keep going at the end of the challenge?

We couldn’t be more honored or excited to be a partner of its Channel Kindness Tour and Year End Giving Campaign. Not only is Born This Way Foundation donating all funds raised between December 19 and January 19 to Tour Partners, but it is also matching up to $15,000!

This is an incredible opportunity that will benefit Aging UP and many of the nonprofits BTWF partnered with during Lady Gaga’s Joanne World Tour, which began in August.

The tour included a unique element where local grassroots organizations were invited to showcase their missions and gain additional awareness. Aging UP was the proud Channel Kindness Tour Partner for the Sacramento show on August 15, 2017.

Our founders April and Kecia met hundreds of concert goers and utilized the event to kickoff mentor recruitment. That seems like a long time ago as, shortly after, Mentor Orientations were held and the applicant screening process began. In November, we invited our first group of 10 wonderful people to attend Mentor Training, which begins this month!

The funds we receive from Born This Way Foundation will be utilized to recruit, screen, and train our next group of mentors. Each nonprofit Tour Partner is doing exceptional work in their communities.

This amazing opportunity for Aging UP is part of Born This Way Foundation’s series of Kindness Pop Ups at select tour stops, designed to spread kindness and highlight exceptional local nonprofit organizations across the country. Nonprofits are chosen based on their demonstrated excellence in supporting and empowering young people.

Aging UP’s mission is to empower youth with experience in foster care to successfully transition into adulthood. Our services of mentoring and positive recreation will offer youth from foster care a kinder world, encourage them to be kind, and support their overall mental and emotional well-being. We will also provide education and resources to better prepare them to bravely enter adulthood.
