What are the steps for youth to get involved?

    REFERRAL

    Social workers, teachers, caregivers, etc. review eligibility requirements and submit qualified referral

    SCREENING

    Youth willingly participates in screening process, which includes program orientation and option to identify an adult to invite into formal mentoring

    COMMITMENT

    Youth agrees to a one-year commitment of spending regular time with their mentor

  • 4
    BENEFIT

    Once matched, based on youth’s interest, personality and any requests, they engage in fun and personal growth with their mentor and our supportive community

What are the youth eligibility requirements?

Youth who have experienced removal from biological parent(s) due to personal well-being are eligible to participate in the program. Other requirements include:

  • Must be between 13-17 years old for enrollment. Once matched, they may stay in the program until age 22
  • Reside in the Greater Sacramento Area
  • Demonstrate a desire to participate in the program
  • Willing to abide by all Aging UP policies and procedures
  • Obtain parental/guardian and/or social worker consent to participate
  • Agree to a one-year commitment
  • Commit to communicate regularly with mentor — typically this is a minimum of eight hours a month, over at least two visits per month when social distance orders are not in place
  • Must not exhibit significant aggressive, assaultive, or acting-out behaviors
  • Must not be an active danger to self and/or others
  • Must not be substance use dependent
  • No/limited involvement in the juvenile justice system

What benefits do youth gain by participating?

Youth gain the connection of a thoroughly screened and trained adult mentor along with a supportive community. Additional benefits include:
