Caring Adults Help Youth Overcome Statistics
Josh Shipp grew up in in foster care, moving from home to home. As a youth, he experienced abuse and bullying, which eventually led to trying to kill himself with pills. Statistics would say that Josh should be homeless, in prison, or dead. Today, however, he is a successful author, speaker, youth advocate, host of a documentary show, and loving father.
Josh has shared his story with millions of people. To every person he shares this powerful message: every kid is one caring adult away from a success story. This is a truth Josh experienced in his adolescent life when his foster dad Rodney was patient, caring, and believed in Josh’s potential – despite all Josh did to push him away.
Josh’s real-life story is an example of why Aging UP was created. Data proves that the presence of a committed and caring adult helps youth heal from trauma and improve their overall resilience. Seeing an individual’s life empowered through relationship certainly turns that information into impact.
Recently, Josh spoke at the State Theatre of Modesto, an event organized by Sierra Vista Child & Family Services and Stanislaus County Office of Education. Of course, I had to make the trek to see him. And, it was a journey well worth the time.
Josh was just as funny and sincere as I had seen in various clips on his website and YouTube channel. He began by summarizing his past, then continued to share insightful information. Seeing him speak was inspiring and reassuring. Essentially, I heard him say that the work of Aging UP is exactly what is needed to empower youth.
Whether you become a mentor with Aging UP or just know a youth, Josh has advice for all of us:
-
Identify one kid. Invest time in them.
-
Kids spell trust as “T-I-M-E”. When you invest time, you build trust. When you have trust, you have influence.
-
It’s not about talking. It’s about being together. Relax and let fun be part of the equation.
Josh also highlighted his new book, “The Grown-Up’s Guide to Teenage Humans.” In this book, he shares how to be a caring adult in a teenager’s life. The book breaks down the distinct phases of teenage life, examining the challenges at each phase, and offers stories that go deep inside the teen brain.
After his presentation, Josh met with attendees and signed books. He autographed one that could be yours!
